The Loong Boat Festival

The Loong Boat Festival, together with the Spring Festival, Tomb sweeping Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, is known as the four traditional festivals in China. The Dragon Boat Festival culture has a wide influence in the world, and some countries and regions also have activities to celebrate it. In May 2006, the State Council included it in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list; Since 2008, it has been listed as a national statutory holiday. In September 2009, UNESCO officially approved its inclusion in the List of Representative Works of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Loong Boat Festival became the first festival in China to be included in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Loong Boat Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Loong Boat Festival, is a traditional cultural festival of the Han nationality popular in China. On 5th May Lunar month every year, Loong Boat Festival is a folk festival integrating worship of gods and ancestors, praying for blessings and exorcism, celebrating entertainment and eating. The Loong Boat Festival originated from the worship of natural phenomena and evolved from dragon worship in ancient times.

Legend has it that Qu Yuan, a poet of the ancient state of Chu, jumped into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month to kill himself, and the Dragon Boat Festival is also regarded as a festival to commemorate Qu Yuan by later generations, as well as to commemorate Wu Zixu, Cao'e, and Jie Zi Tui, and so on. The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival covers ancient astrological culture, humanities and philosophy, and contains profound and rich cultural connotations. In the development of inheritance, it is a mixture of a variety of folklore as a whole, and there are differences in the content or details of the customs in various places due to different regional cultures.
