Home PV storage is becoming more and more popular, but many customers don't know how to choose the best inverter for their house, today we will discuss how to choose the best inverter for your home.

1. Assess Your Power Requirements

  • Calculate Load: List all essential appliances and devices you need during a power outage.

  • Power Rating: Check the wattage of each device and calculate the total power requirement.

    • Fans: 3 × 75W = 225W

    • Lights: 5 × 20W = 100W

    • TV: 1 × 120W = 120W

    • Total: 445W

    • Example:

Tip: Multiply the total by 1.2 to factor in future expansion or surge power.

  • Total Load: 445W×1.2=534WHome Energy Storage Series

2. Choose the Right Inverter Power

Inverters are rated in VA (Volt-Amperes), but appliances use Watts. Use the formula:

Required VA=Total Power (W) / Power Factor (0.8 for most households)

Example: Required VA=534/0.8=667.5≈700VA

  • Small Load: < 700 VA (lights, fans, basic electronics)

  • Medium Load: 700 VA – 1500 VA (fridge, washing machine)

  • Large Load: > 1500 VA (air conditioners, multiple heavy appliances)

3. Select the Inverter Type

  • Pure Sine Wave: Ideal for sensitive appliances like refrigerators and computers. It produces clean power similar to the grid.

  • Modified Sine Wave: Suitable for basic equipment but can cause damage to sensitive devices.

  • Square Wave: Cheapest but noisy and inefficient; avoid for home use.

4. Battery Selection

  • Battery Capacity (Ah): Depends on your power needs and backup duration.
    Use the formula:

Battery Capacity (Ah)=Total Load (W)×Backup HoursBattery Voltage (V) / text{Battery Capacity (Ah)

Example (12V battery, 3-hour backup):

Ah=534×3 / 12=133.5 Ah→150 Ah (rounded)

  • Types of Batteries:

    • Lead-Acid: Affordable but requires maintenance.

    • Tubular: Long lifespan and reliable.

    • Lithium-Ion: Expensive but compact and maintenance-free.

5. Check for Compatibility with Solar Panels (Optional)

  • If considering solar, look for hybrid inverters that can switch between solar, battery, and grid power.

6. Evaluate Efficiency and Warranty

  • Check the efficiency rating (higher is better).

  • Look for inverters with 3–5 years warranty and good customer service.

7. Additional Features to Consider

  • LCD Display: Shows battery status, voltage, and error notifications.

  • Automatic Changeover: Switches seamlessly during outages.

  • Smart Connectivity: Some inverters come with mobile apps for monitoring.

Example Configuration:

Appliance Quantity Power (W) Total (W)
LED Bulb 6 10 60
Ceiling Fan 4 75 300
Television 1 100 100
Wi-Fi Router 1 15 15
Total

475W
  • Recommended Inverter: 850 VA pure sine wave.

  • Battery: 12V, 150 Ah tubular battery for 3 hours of backup.
